Plaka is one of the most traditional resorts in Crete. It is a tiny, picturesque fishing village in the north west of Crete, situated on the banks of the second largest natural harbour in Crete near to the village of Kokkino Horio. The landscape is hilly, peaceful and inspiring, with superb views of Souda Bay (the largest natural bay in the Mediterranean) and the White Mountains (lefka Ori), which are covered in snow in the winter. It is an ideal place to holiday because of its tranquility, good climate and friendly people. The area is protected by the islet of Spinalonga. A day trip to this islet, which lies peacefully across the water with its deserted buildings and Venetian castle, is a favourite.
The pebble beach has repeatedly won awards for cleanliness, with its crystal clear warm and inviting water. Here, right on the seafront, are simple fish taverns in which to sample the mouth watering, local fresh fish, or one of the village's other locally produced specialties such as olive oil, wine and the traditional Cretan drink 'tsikoudia'.
Around the village are many walking routes, by which you can witness the fabulous sunsets, and explore the famous water caves or unspoilt mountain villages of this area, which give one a good sense of the original Cretan way of life.
