Also known as Thera or Thira, Santorini is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands. It is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island. Its spectacular physical beauty, along with beautiful winding streets and whitewashed buildings, have made the island rightly famous.
How To Get There
Direct flights from the UK to Santorini are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Gatwick and Manchester airports. Other options include flights to Mykonos and a ferry to Santorini, or travelling via Athens.

The well preserved ancient settlement in Akrotki is more than 3000 years old and proves to be a fascinating day trip. Thanks to the volcanic eruption evidence of daily life can be seen is street signs give a vivid insight into a lost civilisation.
