Crete's jeep safaris into the mountains and boat rides to small islands offer plenty of excitement and culture, one travel writer has claimed.
Writing for the Press and Journal, Gabrielle Fagan described the Greek island as a "fascinating historical and archeological location", with enough to entertain both parents and children.
She explained that a mountain jeep safari provides dramatic views of the landscape, such as the caves and gorges where endangered vultures can be seen and the fields containing some of the island's 35 million olive trees.
Also suggested as a great day trip was the six-mile boat ride to a former leper colony on the island of Spinalonga where she said people can gain a "fascinating insight into social history", on what is known locally as the Island of Tears.
Another of the Greek islands, Paxos, was recently described by James Murray in the Telegraph as being a timeless destination due to its peaceful sights and sounds.
