How To Get There

The absence of an airport on Andros has helped ensure the island retains much of its original charm. Andros is reached via a flight to Athens and then a ferry crossing (max. 2 hours) from the port of Rafina.

Direct flights to Athens from the UK depart from Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, Luton and Manchester and are offered by:

The port of Rafina is just a 30 minute drive from Athens Airport. For those choosing not to hire a car from Athens there is a reliable bus service between the airport and the port of Rafina.

SunIsle Holidays offer a full travel service including flights, car hire and private taxi transfers as well as apartments, hotels and villas on an accommodation-only basis.

Batsi

More info

The picturesque town of Batsi provides a lovely holiday setting, the town itself is an attractive jumble of whitewashed houses and shady little squares. Just outside the town we have chosen the beautiful coastline of Aghios Marina with its sandy beaches as a quieter more relaxing location for your Andros holiday.

The Insider

Rich in culture and scenery

Andros is the northernmost Cycladic island and second in size after Naxos. The island runs from N-NW to S-SE and consists mainly of three mountain ranges with peaks in the centre reaching almost 1000m.

The island boasts three museums, some lovely architechture and has an important place in Greek naval history - once boasting the second largest port in Greece.

Andros is great location for walking with small tracks, bordered by stone walls dividing fields of goats and sheep. Beaches make up much of the island coastline - the wider sandy beaches are typically on the west coast with smaller secluded beaches and coves elsewhere.

Beaches

There are some 60kms of beaches around the island, from broad sandy cresents to small, almost inaccessible coves. Batsi boasts a good, broad, sandy beach cooled by the Meltemi wind in high summer and there are sunshades and a few trees to provide some protection from the hot summer sun. The water here is normally calm, and being shallow, is a good choice for families with young children.

Those seeking quiet beaches and rough landscapes should explore the north eastern and south eastern parts of the island. Here small coves are waiting to be discovered - some only accessible by boat.

Places to see

Worth visiting are the Archaeological Museum, displaying a rich collection of finds from the excavations on the island; the Museum of Modern Art, staging exhibitions of contemporary Greek artists; and the Maritime Museum.

Other places of interest include:

  • The ancient port of Paleopolis, now mainly below sea level

  • The Panachrantou Monastery at Falika

  • The Byzantine Church of Taxiarchon in Messaria.

The connoisseurs choice

Andros is a comopolitan island that will suit those seeking culture, countryside or beaches. So wether you choose to spend your time relaxing on one of the many beaches or seeing the ruins and museums, Andros is indeed the connoisseurs choice for a Greek island holiday.
